Tree-of-heaven Eradication Now (TEN) is a non-profit working to control the unchecked spread of this nasty, and fast growing tree. This tree species has been identified as invasive by the City of Portland, and the State of Oregon. Each tree can produce up to 350,000 fertile seeds that are wind spread up to three miles from the parent tree.

This tree causes destruction of natural areas and human infrastructure. These trees have cracked foundations, shifted pipe, and caused an untold amount of damage. This often occurs in properties that are adjacent to the tree. They create thickets that reduce the habitat available to wildlife, and produce no eatable fruits or leaves. The leaves even smell foul when crushed. Ailanthus is a bad tree for both people and animals.

We at TEN are working with property owners to remove these trees from the Portland. We have partnered with Portland’s Urban Forestry, a part of Parks and Recreation, as well Friends of Trees, Portland Audubon Society, West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, and local certified arborists. The arborists have agreed to remove these trees at a reduced cost, Friends of Trees will replant at little or no cost, and the City will approve the permit need for removal.

TEN can also provide funding to help with the cost of tree removal. We can also provide guidance on how to remove young trees before they become a major problem.

If you are interested in this program, please email us with your contact information, including your property address.  We will find a certified arborist working in your area, contact the City of Portland about a removal and replant permit, and contact Friends of Trees about planning a planting during the appropriate season. We will work with you to get Ailanthus out of your neighborhood, and out of Portland!
